About this landmark
Allagash Falls: Scenic Waterfall in Northwest Aroostook, ME
Allagash Falls, located in the remote forests of Northwest Aroostook County, Maine, offers a striking natural attraction within the vast Allagash Wilderness Waterway. This waterfall drops approximately 40 feet over rugged basalt rock formations, creating a powerful curtain of water that contrasts sharply with the surrounding green canopy. The falls are part of a largely undeveloped river corridor known for its rich wildlife, including moose and loons, making the location a standout destination for nature lovers seeking peaceful, pristine wilderness far from populated areas.
The geological makeup of the falls adds to its appeal, with dark volcanic basalt creating natural ledges where the water flows and churns before continuing downstream. The surrounding forest is dense with northern hardwoods and evergreens, providing a rich habitat that changes dramatically with the seasons, especially during autumn when vibrant foliage colors frame the waterfall. The area’s long history as part of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway—a protected 92-mile route of rivers and lakes—preserves both the natural landscape and the fascinating heritage of this wild region.
Visitors appreciate the falls not only for their beauty but also as part of a larger outdoor experience that includes canoeing, fishing, and camping at nearby sites along the river. With its combination of geological interest, wildlife viewing opportunities, and relative seclusion, Allagash Falls remains a must-see for those traveling in Maine’s northernmost reaches.
